Top 5 Best “Get out and Dance!” Wedding Songs

I know what you’re thinking.

“Zac, what does music have to do with Wedding photography?”

EVERYTHING. You have to book a great DJ or band. They need to get you out on the floor dancing. Otherwise, I’m just gonna take a bunch of photos of people eating salmon and filet. No one wants that.

So, as always I’m here to help! Here’s my pick for the all time top 5 best wedding songs that will get your guests out to dance at any age. Kids love these songs, adults do and even your totally unhip moms and dads are likely to bust a move.

5. No Sleep til Brooklyn

Come on how can the Brooklyn Wedding Photographer not offer up some Beastie Boys? And if you’re having your wedding in my borough, you might as well get the masses moving with a local jam.

4. Love Shack

The B-52’s knocked it right out of the park with this one. Hell, they even got RuPaul in on the action. There’s no one breathing that doesn’t start moving once this song starts. Plus during the breakdown you can clear the floor and show your moves to the whole crowd.

3. It’s Tricky

Here’s another all time fav for your party rock friends. Y’know who I’m talking about we all have those friends that get everyone involved on the dance floor. MAKE SURE YOU INVITE THOSE FRIENDS TO YOUR WEDDING. I can’t get the party started alone.

2. Shout

It’s a classic! How do you even stand still while this song is playing? And there’s even a break or two in there so you can catch your breath. I can’t even count the number of times I was shaking on the floor for this song. It’s so much fun!

1. Footloose

I know right! Kenny Loggins had all the hits in the 80’s. The titular song of rebellion in a movie about a town that you it was illegal to dance!? I wish I was a teenager when this song was on rotation. Don’t get me wrong I was still old enough to strap on a pair of quad skates and own it at the skating rink. Here’s another song with a classic dance scene from a movie! How you do sit idly by while this song is on?

What’s the trend here?

So, what did we notice? 4 out of 5 of these songs are from the 1980’s. People love the 80’s. It’s a documented fact… somewhere. The music was fun and people can remember where they were when the song came out, or they just know the words. Both are great recipes for good vibes.

What are your top 5 favorite songs to hear at weddings?

Remember once you know what songs you want you’re gonna want someone that can hang with your reception on that dance floor and get those pictures of your Aunt Becky doing the Dougie. It might as well be me. Email me for a quote, and lets get those engagement pictures taken care of now!

5 Things that Happen when you Hire a Brooklyn Photographer

1. You’re gonna see some cool locations!

I know my neighborhood well. But I’m always exploring new ones. My favorite places to shoot are Coney Island, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and Central Park. I spend a few days each month scouting new spots. Wanna see where the Beastie Boys took photos with Glen E. Friedman? Or How about we head into TriBeCa and you get Wedding photos in front of the firehouse from Ghostbusters? One thing’s for sure I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve.

2. Your photos are gonna look unique.

I spend a lot of time researching trends of the industry. I prefer to avoid most of them. Some ideas, though, are timeless and I include those into my style. I believe a great photographer never stops learning. In this industry, you really have to sample it all, take what you love and make it a part of you.

3. You’re gonna laugh. No seriously!

One thing is for certain. You and I are gonna have a good time. I love doing this. It’s not just a job. It’s who I am. We’re gonna joke and we’re gonna laugh. There’s gonna be awkward moments, we’re gonna laugh about those too. Who would you rather spend the last few hours of your single life with? Some uptight “been in this business for decades” wedding professional… OR This Guy (I’m pointing at myself)! I’ll do the dang Curly Shuffle if it means putting a smile on your face.

4. We’re all gonna dance.

I think it’s weird if I’m the only one not moving on the dance floor. I don’t like to call people “square” (seriously that’s just a strange thing to call a person, it’s 2015) but if you won’t dance at a wedding then you are a square. I don’t wanna be the square at your wedding. I love to dance. While you’re at it put Footloose on your Wedding Day Playlist, if you’re having a band play, make sure they know it. Neutron Dance by the Pointer Sisters is pretty great too!

5. You’re gonna have a new friend.

We just spent a whole day together. It was intense! Chances are you cried, chances are I did too. We definitely laughed. We danced, we explored. We both did that wide eyed “I know right!” look when your uncle started breakdancing. How could we not be friends?

There’s a reason folks get married with me then call me up a little later for pregnancy/baby pics and then see me for family photos. I become part of the family. If I grew up with you, chances are I already am. Maybe I’ll stop by on Thanksgiving after dinner for dessert!

Seriously, though this sounds awesome right? Well There’s no time like right now to contact me for a quote. I promise I’m super friendly.

David and Angela—Way Down South

Last weekend I bolted down to Virginia Beach for the wedding of my friends David and Angela. If you look back far enough in my archives you’ll see some really great engagement photos I did with them last summer. It’s awesome to see that they loved those pictures enough to hire me for the… main event, as it were. They had a really special and very personal wedding planned. So personal in fact that Angela did the bulk of the wedding planning, and the location for the ceremony/reception and after party was at Angela’s parent’s place. A huge under taking, no doubt, but Angela had a lot of help. She requisitioned the help of her co-workers and friends to pull it off. David, no slouch in the entertainment sector himself, pulled together friends for the evening’s entertainment. Easily one of the best wedding bands this old timer’s been privileged to work with! It’s impossible to fully explain how fun the night was. Of course, I was there snapping away for some of the best party photos on either side of the Mason-Dixon line.

This wedding was particularly special, not only because I was there to witness two great friends (and individually dynamic persons/musicians) come together in love and family, but it was the first wedding with a brand new assistant! My girlfriend, Victoria has taken up the lens and camera for this wedding. I’m super proud of some the shots she took and it’s so interesting to see how different our eyes for images are. In the future, I’ll be having her along on a lot more weddings, I can’t say how great it makes me feel that we’re building a future together in this business. She’s been an amazing support for my return to event photography and … well there’s not a lot more to say than that it feels good to share this with her.

Back to the wedding, Angela had us a in house for the the weekend to share with some of her friends while we traveled down. Angela’s friends were a total riot. I’m really glad she decided to mix it up and put us with her friends. I’ve known Dave for a bit longer and by proxy I’m friends with many of his friends. I love those folks, but the idea of making a bunch of new friends is just such a great way to spend a weekend at the beach. Just get a look at some of the shots from the wedding!

Christina and Brandon—Wedding in Wine Country

Typically I don’t think of New Jersey as Wine Country, but then again I’m more keyed into the bourbon hemisphere of the booze map. This set is really special to me because I got to see an old friend tie the knot. Christina originally booked me for her engagement photos last winter/spring and she was so pleased with them that she wanted me to do her wedding as well. Obviously, I said yes! Brandon and I had only met for a few hours but we had so much in common and got on so well during the engagement shoot, seeing him at the wedding was like seeing an old friend. They chose a nice little winery in South Jersey for their ceremony/reception. It was really great to catch all the family moments for a family I’ve known for so much of my life. Her parents joked about the “goofy kid from down the block that used to play flashlight tag every weekend”. I told them not a lot’s changed. Without further ado here are the pictures from that very special day. Christina and Brandon thank you so much!

Part of the Family: Zoe & Frank

Back when I lived in Jersey City, a couple of friends of mine, Frank and Zoe, used to come see me everyday at my bar. When they told me they were tying the knot , I didn’t out right offer my services. (HUGE MISTAKE) I just assumed they already had all the details hashed out. As the months lead up to the wedding they were planning and everything was going great it seemed. Out one night, I saw them at a bar and I remembered that they were getting married that weekend. I asked them who they had shooting their wedding. Frank told me they looked around but it had just become too late and they were just having lunch with their parents and then doing a New York style ceremony at the Courthouse, not a big deal really. I protested! It certainly was a big deal! And  I demanded that they let me shoot it! Good thing I got a little more assertive, because the pictures came out amazing. It just goes to show you, its a special day because its yours. I have to say this was one of the most relaxed and fun shoots I got to do. I spent time with their families and by the end of the day, I felt like I was family too.

Kim & Justin Furniss

Growing up is a funny thing. One day you’re sitting there watching the Goonies on cable in the dead heat of the summer and then suddenly all your friends are getting married. It can throw you for a loop if you aren’t ready (I have a relatively large dvd collection and a lot of John Cusack movies so I’m pretty well adjusted.) I say all that to say this: I’ve known Kim & Justin for as long as Kim & Justin have known Kim & Justin. Did that make sense? I hope so. Anyhow after courting for several years my two good friends called me up and of course I was overwhelmed with joy to hear the news.

How does the old saying go? There’s nothing like old friends. Back in college Justin used to get us into to trouble, and Kim would get us out. Not a whole lot has changed. One of those classic examples of opposites attract, I suppose. It was scorcher that day, they opted to have the whole ceremony in their back yard. That was fortuitous because afterwards we took the wedding and turned it into a pool party! Man, I love shooting my friend’s weddings.

Brooke & Bob

Did I ever mention I really dig ampersands. You use them instead of writing “and”. In general it’s most appropriate when the two nouns you are connecting have a familiarity or common proximity. Y’know peanut butter & jelly or fish & chips I’m sure you get the point. But that’s just me I’m kind of writing geek. I feel it was more than fitting Brooke & Bob share one when I mention them… they go well together, they look good together, so I say it’s ampersand time.  Anyhow, that really doesn’t begin to describe how excited I was to be present on this day.

Brooke is an old friend. One of the oldest, in fact. You see I moved around a lot growing up. And sadly, you don’t get to take your friends with you when you go. Not so sadly though, there’s an opportunity for new friendships to bloom when you settle back down. So in 5th grade I met Brooke. For the next 8 years we went through school together. We spent more than a few class projects together, worked on the class yearbook, we even did crabwalk relay once. Good times! So when she told me she was looking to a photographer for her wedding reception/vow renewal I jumped at the chance!

Along came the day. My assistant (Melanie McLean of Wayward Winos fame) and I showed up at the hotel and met Brooke in the suite. Mel and I geared up and I went in to see Brooke. I had no idea that all her bridesmaids were friends of mine from high school. It was like a mini reunion. Brooke started to get all teary eyed. She said something to the effect about how blessed she was that we all could be here for her. I told her to stop it or she was going to get me to cry, and I didn’t make it through 8 years of school without having them see me get all emotional to breakdown now. We all laughed and things progressed on a very happy note for the rest of the day.

After hearing Brooke talk about Bob and seeing pictures of their wedding ceremony in Jamaica it was a total pleasure meeting him in the flesh. I got to meet the rest of Brooke’s family as well (I’m not positive but I think there’s a fishing trip I got roped into with Mr. Conaway).

We went from the photos at the hotel to the cocktail hour to the vow renewal and finally got to my favorite part: Dance Floor Mayhem. It was a seriously fun night and great to see everyone. Here are my Top Ten pics from the night (OK Eleven I had a hard time leaving one out).

“If You Start Me Up!”….

…Just like the Rolling Stones said “If you start me up I’ll never stop.”  I’ve been waiting about a year to start a blog for my wedding photography.  If you’ve read my other blogs, you know that I like to get right into the thick of the scene and produce a story to show you what it was like to be there.  I guess you could say I’m trying to help you live vicariously through my lens.  I’ve been having a blast doing it at rock shows so now I want to bring that momentum and enthusiasm over to the wedding arena.

My angle is simple: I’m New York’s Rock N’ Roll Wedding Photographer. Each week I’ll recap a previous wedding and give you a top ten photos.  I’ll tell you what it was like for me as an outsider looking in, and we’ll just see where it goes from there. I think you can dig it.  So here’s to romance, good music and a gathering of old and new friends!
